More than 30 people have been killed following a suicide bombing targeting a passenger train in southwestern Pakistan, according to provincial officials.
The attack occurred in Quetta, where an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a shuttle train transporting Pakistani security personnel and their families. Initial reports on Sunday placed the death toll at 24, but officials said on Monday that the number of fatalities had risen above 30.
The train was reportedly carrying passengers from the army cantonment area in Quetta to connect with the Jaffar Express as many travelers were heading home ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations.
The separatist militant group Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the bombing, describing it as a suicide operation. Independent verification of the claim has not yet been confirmed.
Authorities said the explosion derailed the train’s engine and several coaches, with some carriages overturning. Images from the scene showed destroyed vehicles, damaged homes, twisted railway tracks, and smoke rising from the wreckage.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province by area, has witnessed a long-running insurgency by separatist groups who accuse the government of exploiting the region’s natural resources without adequately benefiting local communities. The province borders both Iran and Afghanistan and hosts major Chinese-backed infrastructure projects, including the strategic Gwadar port.
The latest bombing follows a series of recent militant attacks in the region. Last year, militants hijacked the Jaffar Express and held hundreds hostage before Pakistani security forces ended the siege in a military operation that left dozens dead, including passengers, soldiers, and attackers.
