Assimi Goïta, the head of Mali’s military government, has appointed himself defence minister following the death of his predecessor in a deadly wave of coordinated attacks across the country.
The former defence chief, Sadio Camara, was reportedly killed in a suspected suicide truck bombing targeting his residence near the capital, Bamako. His death came amid a surge in violence led by armed groups operating across multiple regions.
A decree announced on state television confirmed that Goïta will now oversee both the presidency and the defence ministry, a move widely seen as an effort to tighten control as his administration faces mounting security challenges. He will be supported by army chief of staff Oumar Diarra, who has been named minister delegate.
The attacks, launched in late April by an alliance of separatist and jihadist factions, including the Azawad Liberation Front and the JNIM, have intensified instability across the country. The groups have carried out coordinated raids and imposed partial blockades in key areas, including the capital.
The offensive forced Malian and allied Russian-backed forces to withdraw from the northern city of Kidal, raising concerns about the government’s grip on territory.
Authorities say several soldiers suspected of collaborating with the attackers have been arrested, with investigations suggesting involvement by both active and former military personnel.
Mali has also stepped up joint military operations with neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso under the Alliance of Sahel States. The three military-led nations have increasingly relied on Russian support after distancing themselves from France.
Despite these efforts, large areas remain outside government control, and the security situation continues to deteriorate.
