Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has defended Iran’s right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, reaffirming Moscow’s support for Tehran amid growing pressure from the United States over its nuclear activities.
Lavrov said Iran, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has the legal right to pursue a civilian nuclear program, including uranium enrichment for energy and medical purposes. He stressed that the issue should be resolved through diplomacy and international negotiations rather than sanctions or military threats.
The comments come as the administration of Donald Trump increases pressure on Tehran over its nuclear programme and regional influence. Washington has raised concerns about Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, which have exceeded limits set under the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Russia has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions on Iran and continues to support diplomatic engagement over confrontation. Analysts say Moscow’s stance also reflects its broader strategic partnership with Tehran amid ongoing tensions with Western countries.
Iran has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful purposes, including electricity generation and medical research, while rejecting calls to fully halt uranium enrichment.
