South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has dismissed the country’s army chief and finance minister in a fresh government reshuffle, according to state media reports released late Wednesday.
The changes are the latest in a series of leadership shake-ups under Kiir’s administration, moves that political observers say are aimed at tightening control amid growing uncertainty over the country’s future leadership succession.
General Paul Nang, who had served as army chief since October 2025, was removed following mounting criticism over worsening insecurity across the country. Finance Minister Salvatore Garang Mabiordit, appointed less than three months ago, was also dismissed.
Kiir named General Santino Deng Wol as the new head of the army. Wol, a longtime ally of the president from the Bahr El Gazal region, previously held the same position between 2020 and 2024.
The president also appointed Kuol Daniel Ayulo, a senior technocrat with experience in both the finance and trade ministries, as the new finance minister.
South Sudan continues to face challenges in implementing key reforms outlined in the 2018 peace agreement that ended years of civil war, including military unification and preparations for national elections.
