Abducted teachers and schoolchildren in Oyo State have appeared in a new video released by their captors, begging authorities to meet the kidnappers’ demands to secure their freedom.
In the one-minute footage, two female teachers were seen speaking under distress. One spoke in Yoruba while the other, holding a toddler, spoke in English. All the victims appeared frightened and exhausted, reportedly after spending 13 days in captivity.
The victims were among 46 people abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers raided Community High School in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area. The attackers reportedly took 39 pupils and students along with seven teachers.
In the video, one teacher pleaded in Yoruba, urging authorities to show mercy and avoid using force. She said the victims, including children and adults, had been suffering harsh conditions in the bush, exposed to rain and sun, and begged that the kidnappers’ demands be accepted to secure their release.
Another teacher, speaking in English, also appealed directly to Governor Seyi Makinde, asking the government to negotiate with the abductors and do whatever was necessary to save their lives.
Following the incident, teachers’ unions and civil society groups in Oyo State staged peaceful protests, demanding urgent government action to rescue the victims. The Nigeria Teachers Congress and the Oyo State Teachers Action Group warned that school safety can no longer be ignored, calling for stronger security in public schools across the state.
The Nigeria Teachers Congress said the situation was alarming, especially given the presence of very young children among the abductees, stressing that no child should be exposed to such dangerous conditions.
In response, the state government said efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims. The Governor’s Security Adviser assured protesters that authorities are actively working on the case, but noted that some operational details cannot be disclosed so as not to compromise rescue operations.
