Israel Claims Senior Hamas Commander Killed in Gaza Airstrike

Israel says it has killed Mohammed Odeh, a senior Hamas military commander in Gaza, during an airstrike in Gaza City, amid rising tensions surrounding the fragile ceasefire in the enclave.

Israeli officials announced on Wednesday that the strike took place a day earlier in northern Gaza. Defence Minister Israel Katz described Odeh as a key figure in Hamas’s armed wing, while the Israeli military said the operation followed months of intelligence monitoring.

Hamas had not immediately commented on the claim. Reports indicate Odeh succeeded former Qassam Brigades commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was reportedly killed earlier this month.

The strike reportedly hit the busy Remal neighbourhood of Gaza City as residents prepared for the Eid al-Adha celebrations. Medical sources said at least six people were killed and about 20 others injured in the attack.

Israel has continued targeting senior Hamas leaders since the war began after the October 7, 2023 attacks. Palestinian health authorities say more than 72,800 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict started.
