Iran Says It Downed US Predator Drone After Airspace Violation

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has shot down a US MQ-1 Predator drone after it allegedly entered Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf early Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the IRGC, air defense units detected the unmanned aircraft shortly after it crossed into Iranian-controlled airspace and destroyed it using surface-to-air missile systems before it could carry out any operation.

Iranian military officials said the incident demonstrates the country’s readiness to defend its territorial waters and airspace, warning that any future incursions would face a swift response.

The reported interception comes one day after Iranian military authorities announced the destruction of another drone near Qeshm Island. Iranian officials claimed the aircraft was identified and neutralized by air defense systems operating within the country’s integrated defense network.

The developments add to growing tensions in the Persian Gulf region, where military activity and surveillance operations have increasingly become points of friction between Iran and the United States.

As of the time of reporting, there was no immediate response from US officials regarding Iran’s claim that the MQ-1 Predator drone had been shot down.
