Obi Unveils Kwankwaso as Running Mate, Vows Equal Partnership

The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has assured that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso will play a significant leadership role as vice president if their ticket wins the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking after accepting the NDC presidential nomination, Obi said Kwankwaso would serve as a trusted partner in governance rather than occupying a ceremonial position. He formally announced the former Kano State governor as his running mate following the party's nomination process.

Obi described his candidacy as a mission to rebuild Nigeria through improved security, economic recovery, quality healthcare, educational reforms, and accountable leadership. He stressed that the country faces growing challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, rising poverty, and declining public confidence in government institutions.

Addressing security concerns, Obi noted Nigeria's worsening position in global terrorism rankings and pledged to strengthen the nation's security architecture to better protect lives and property. He also praised the contributions of Nigerian troops to international peacekeeping missions over the years.

On healthcare, Obi promised to expand health insurance coverage, rehabilitate primary healthcare centres nationwide, and increase funding for the sector. He further outlined plans to improve education through greater investment in schools, teachers, and vocational training.

The former Anambra State governor also highlighted agriculture as a key driver of economic growth, promising increased investment to tackle food insecurity and boost productivity. In the energy sector, he pledged to significantly increase electricity generation to support industrial development.

Obi additionally vowed to support small businesses, reduce corruption, cut the cost of governance, and strengthen democratic institutions if elected.

Reaffirming his confidence in the alliance, Obi said Kwankwaso would be fully involved in decision-making and governance, describing the vice-presidential role as a genuine partnership aimed at delivering a "New Nigeria."
