Iran’s military has announced that it will no longer permit American weapons shipments to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to US bases in the region, signaling a major escalation in tensions across the Gulf.
Army spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia said on Wednesday that the strategic waterway is now under coordinated control of Iran’s armed forces, with the western section monitored by the IRGC Navy and the eastern section controlled by the Iranian Army Navy.
According to Akraminia, any country seeking passage through the strait must do so under Iranian supervision to ensure what he described as “safe and harmless transit.”
The Iranian official claimed the new security arrangement would strengthen Tehran’s control over the region and could generate massive economic benefits for the country.
He also said Iran had successfully resisted what he described as enemy attempts to weaken its missile and nuclear capabilities during recent conflicts, adding that Tehran’s military strategy has shifted to a more offensive posture.
Akraminia warned that any hostile action against Iran would face a severe response, while also declaring that the United States would eventually be pushed out of the region entirely.
In a separate statement, IRGC Navy official Saeed Siahsorani warned that any US military action in the Persian Gulf would trigger a powerful Iranian response.
“If America makes a mistake, the Persian Gulf could become a graveyard for US forces,” he said.
Iranian officials also claimed that several US military bases in the region had already been heavily damaged during recent confrontations, though independent verification of the claims was not immediately available.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes, with a significant portion of global energy supplies passing through the narrow waterway each day.
Tehran has repeatedly warned that it is prepared for a prolonged conflict if the fragile ceasefire reached in April collapses.
