India has announced a major demolition campaign targeting what authorities describe as illegal structures near its border with Pakistan, as tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours continue to linger following last year’s military confrontation.
Interior Minister Amit Shah ordered officials to remove all unauthorised buildings located within 15 kilometres of the international border, according to a statement released by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.
The minister also directed security agencies to intensify efforts against cross-border crimes, including infiltration, narcotics trafficking, smuggling, terror financing and illegal encroachment.
The move comes months after relations between India and Pakistan sharply deteriorated over violence in the disputed Kashmir region. Last year, both countries exchanged air strikes, drone attacks and artillery fire during a four-day conflict that left more than 70 people dead.
New Delhi blamed Pakistan for supporting the deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that triggered the escalation, an accusation Islamabad strongly denied.
Officials said the latest border measures are part of a broader security strategy aimed at tightening surveillance and strengthening control along the frontier, particularly in Rajasthan and other sensitive border regions.
India has long accused Pakistan of facilitating weapons and narcotics smuggling across the border, while Pakistan has repeatedly rejected the allegations and accused India of supporting unrest inside its territory.
The border between the two countries, including the Line of Control in Kashmir, stretches more than 3,300 kilometres and remains one of the world’s most heavily militarised frontiers.
Despite a ceasefire agreement reached after last year’s clashes, diplomatic relations between both nations remain fragile, with security concerns continuing to fuel mistrust on both sides.
