How Three Dogs Rescued Radio Nigeria Broadcaster From Armed Attack

A Kaduna-based journalist, James Ogbu, has recounted how his three dogs helped save his life after he was violently attacked by suspected bandits near his residence in Kaduna State.

Ogbu, a broadcaster with Radio Nigeria, said the incident occurred on the night of May 13, 2026, while he was returning home from work. According to him, two attackers riding a motorcycle ambushed him just a few minutes from his house and immediately launched a vicious assault.

He explained that one of the attackers struck him on the head with a knife, prompting him to fight back in self-defence. As he struggled with one of the assailants on the ground, the second attacker repeatedly hit him with a large stone, causing severe injuries to his face, nose, eyes, and teeth.

Despite screaming for help, no one initially came to his rescue. However, his dogs heard the commotion, rushed to the scene, and attacked one of the assailants. Their intervention forced the attackers to flee, leaving the injured journalist behind.

Ogbu was later rushed to a hospital by residents who arrived after the attackers escaped. Due to the severity of his injuries and heavy blood loss, he was referred to another medical facility for further treatment.

The journalist said the attackers made away with his phone, wallet, and other valuables during the attack. He believes the assault may have been more than a simple robbery, describing it as a possible attempt on his life.

Although police have begun investigations and questioned several suspects, no arrests directly linked to the attack have been confirmed. Ogbu said he has asked investigators to proceed carefully until he is physically able to help identify the culprits.

He added that security has since been strengthened in the area, while he continues to receive medical treatment, including plans to see an eye specialist over injuries affecting his left eye.

The veteran broadcaster expressed gratitude to his family, neighbours, colleagues, and especially his dogs, which he credited with saving him from what could have been a fatal attack.
