Five Nations Boycott Eurovision as Protests Erupt Over Israel’s Participation

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Vienna during the Eurovision Song Contest final to protest Israel’s participation amid the ongoing war in Gaza, while five countries officially boycotted the competition.

According to reports, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia withdrew from the event, arguing that Israel should not be allowed to compete while the conflict in Gaza continues. Some broadcasters in those countries also declined to air the contest.

Protesters marched through the Austrian capital accusing Eurovision organisers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), of applying double standards by banning Russia after its invasion of Ukraine while allowing Israel to remain in the competition.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, defended his country’s boycott, saying the decision placed Spain on “the right side of history”.

The controversy has triggered widespread criticism from activists and artists across Europe. More than 1,000 musicians and entertainers reportedly signed an open letter urging fans to boycott the event over Israel’s inclusion.

Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnès Callamard also criticised the EBU, describing the organisation’s stance as an example of “blatant double standards”.

Al Jazeera reported that about 2,000 protesters gathered in Vienna on Saturday, with many accusing Eurovision organisers of helping to normalise Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Eurovision remains one of the world’s most-watched music competitions, attracting millions of viewers annually. However, this year’s edition has become one of the most politically divisive events in the contest’s history.
