Earthquake in Southwest China: Buildings Collapse, Thousands Evacuated

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck China’s southwestern Guangxi region early Monday morning, causing building collapses, fatalities, and large-scale evacuations, according to state media reports.

Authorities confirmed that at least two people were killed, one person is missing, and four others were injured, though none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The quake hit near Liuzhou city, prompting the evacuation of more than 7,000 residents as rescue teams continued search and relief operations.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that 13 buildings collapsed in the affected area during the early hours of the quake. Emergency crews were deployed immediately to assess damage and search for survivors.

Transport infrastructure, including railway lines, was inspected for safety, with officials warning of possible disruptions. However, reports indicated that communication networks, as well as power, water, and gas supplies, were largely functioning normally.

Local authorities and emergency response teams remain on high alert as aftershocks and structural risks are being assessed. Rescue operations are ongoing in affected zones.

The earthquake adds to a series of recent seismic activities in the region, raising concerns about preparedness in densely populated urban areas of southwestern China.
