As preparations for Eid-el-Kabir gather momentum, the prices of rams in Kaduna State have surged significantly, making it difficult for many Muslim families to afford the sacrificial animals ahead of the celebration.
A market survey conducted across major livestock markets in Kaduna metropolis, including Zango, Rigasa and Bashama Road, showed that although rams are available in large numbers, patronage remains low due to high prices.
Small-sized rams are currently being sold for between ₦150,000 and ₦250,000, while medium and large-sized ones cost between ₦300,000 and ₦1 million, depending on their breed and size.
Many residents described the prices as far higher than in previous years. Some buyers said they were delaying purchases in the hope that prices would drop closer to the Sallah festivities.
One prospective buyer, Abdulrahman Usman, said the current prices were worrying but expressed optimism that traders might reduce costs before the celebration.
Another resident, Ibrahim Lawal, said the economic situation and other family responsibilities had forced him to postpone buying a ram.
Livestock traders blamed the price increase on rising transportation costs, insecurity along supply routes, expensive animal feed and higher maintenance expenses.
A dealer at Rigasa market, Alhaji Suleiman Adamu, explained that traders now spend more money transporting, feeding and medicating the animals before they are sold.
Some sellers have also started displaying rams in residential areas and along major roads in an effort to attract more customers.
Another dealer, Bilyaminu Musa, who imports rams from Niger Republic for premium buyers, said he had already sold 14 out of the 40 rams he brought into Kaduna. According to him, the cheapest ram in his stock costs ₦350,000, while the most expensive goes for ₦700,000.
Despite the availability of livestock across the city, many residents say the harsh economic realities are limiting their ability to participate fully in the Eid-el-Kabir tradition.
