A rare albino buffalo in Bangladesh nicknamed “Donald Trump” because of its blond, flowing hair has been rescued from slaughter and transferred to the national zoo after becoming an internet sensation.
The 700-kilogram buffalo, known for its unusual appearance resembling the hairstyle of US President Donald Trump, had originally been prepared for sacrifice during Eid al-Adha celebrations.
However, authorities stepped in just hours before the animal was due to be slaughtered, citing its rarity and growing public attention.
Officials from Bangladesh’s National Zoo confirmed that the buffalo would now be placed under special care and monitored in quarantine for two weeks before being introduced to visitors.
The animal had attracted huge crowds in Narayanganj, with residents and social media users flocking to take photos and videos with the celebrity buffalo.
Its former owner, Zia Uddin Mridha, said the buffalo earned the nickname because of its “extraordinary” blond hair, which stood out from ordinary buffaloes in the region.
Police later assisted livestock officials in relocating the animal after the government ordered that it should be preserved instead of sacrificed.
Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country of around 170 million people, marks Eid al-Adha with the ritual sacrifice of livestock including cows, goats and buffaloes. More than 12 million animals are expected to be sacrificed during this year’s celebrations.
Officials said the albino buffalo is still young and could live for several more years under protected care at the zoo.
