At least 16 people are feared dead and several others are missing following a suspected bandit attack on Kiliya village in Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State on Friday afternoon, May 29.
According to Channels Television, residents had just completed their Juma’at prayers and were taking part in Eid-el-Kabir celebrations when armed men on motorcycles stormed the community and opened fire.
A resident who spoke anonymously said panic broke out immediately the attackers arrived.
“After the Friday prayers, we were sitting together when I called a boy selling local drinks and bought from him. Suddenly, the bandits arrived. The boy and I ran into a house and hid. While inside, we heard screams and gunshots everywhere. When the shooting stopped and we came out, we saw about 16 lifeless bodies, including some of my relatives,” he said.
Some residents believe the attack may have been a reprisal, following the reported killing of two suspected members of a criminal gang by local vigilantes or villagers days earlier.
A source described the incident as a possible revenge attack, suggesting that the victims may have been targeted in retaliation.
“This appears to be a revenge attack. Two bandits were reportedly killed recently, and they were believed to belong to a notorious gang. That may have triggered this brutal response,” the source said.
The Katsina State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
