A retired Major General of the Nigerian Army, Rabe Abubakar, and his wife were kidnapped on Saturday by armed bandits along the Matazu axis in Katsina State while travelling to attend a wedding ceremony.
According to security sources, the attackers ambushed their vehicle on the highway, opening fire and injuring the driver, who managed to escape. The retired general and his wife were taken away into a nearby forest.
The abandoned vehicle, a red Peugeot 504, was later found at the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters with visible bullet holes, indicating the violence of the attack. A video circulating online also shows the damaged car at the scene.
This incident adds to a growing pattern of insecurity in Katsina State, which has witnessed repeated bandit attacks in recent years. It is the second known abduction involving a retired senior military officer in the state, following the 2025 kidnapping of Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga, who was held for nearly two months before being released.
In a separate attack just a day earlier, bandits reportedly stormed Kiliya village in Dutsinma Local Government Area after Friday prayers, killing at least 16 people and forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes. Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunmen opened fire on villagers and passersby, leaving several families displaced and others missing.
Security challenges continue to escalate in parts of northwestern Nigeria, with residents calling for stronger protection and urgent government intervention.
