Thousands of Bahrainis staged protests across several towns, including Sitra, Bilad al-Qadeem, Maqabah, Sanabis, Abu Saiba, and Bani Jamra, denouncing the Bahraini government’s intensified crackdown on Shia citizens and clerics.
Demonstrators expressed solidarity with detained Shia religious figures and called for an end to what they described as systematic persecution and suppression of Shia religious activities in the Gulf kingdom. Protesters also condemned recent arrests carried out by Bahraini security forces.
According to reports linked to opposition groups, clashes erupted between protesters and security personnel in Sitra during Saturday night’s demonstrations.
The unrest follows a series of raids in which Bahraini authorities reportedly arrested several prominent Shia clerics and transferred them to undisclosed locations without publicly announcing formal charges or judicial warrants.
Earlier this month, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry announced the arrest of 41 individuals accused of links with Iran. Authorities also revoked the citizenship of 69 Bahrainis, including clerics, activists, women, and children, accusing them of supporting Iranian retaliatory attacks against American and Israeli military targets in West Asia.
The Bahraini opposition and human rights groups have criticized the measures as collective punishment and a violation of human rights standards.
Bahrain hosts the US Fifth Fleet and has faced growing regional tensions following the recent conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
