The Anambra State Government has introduced a new law regulating burial and funeral ceremonies in the state, banning extravagant practices such as the presentation of cows, goats, and expensive gifts during condolence visits.
The legislation, passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly, aims to reduce financial pressure on bereaved families and curb excessive spending associated with funerals.
Under the new rules, burials must now be completed within a single day, and all funeral ceremonies are restricted to Saturdays. Midweek burials (Monday to Friday) are no longer allowed.
The law also prohibits wake-keeping, stating that vigil masses, services of songs, and similar activities must end by 9pm. Entertainment such as live bands, dancing, and cultural performances at funerals has also been banned.
Condolence gifts are limited strictly to small items such as money, one jar of palm wine, one carton of beer, and one crate of soft drinks. The giving of cows, goats, rice, and other expensive items is now prohibited.
In addition, the legislation bans the display of caskets for advertisement, the use of billboards or posters of the deceased, and the wearing of uniform fabrics (“aso ebi”) except for immediate family and approved groups.
Corpses must not remain in mortuaries for more than two months, and funerals must avoid road blockages, excessive gatherings, or disruptive traditional practices.
The law provides penalties for offenders, including fines of up to ₦100,000 or six months imprisonment, or both.
State authorities say the reform is intended to restore order, reduce financial strain on families, and encourage more modest funeral ceremonies across Anambra State.
