Witr prayer is one of the most emphasized Sunnah prayers in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned it, whether at home or while traveling, which shows its great importance.
What is Witr?
“Witr” means odd number
It is the final prayer of the night
Performed after ‘Isha and before Fajr
Can be prayed as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 rak‘ahs.
The most common and easiest method is 3 rak‘ahs
Why Witr is Important:
The Prophet ﷺ said Allah is One (Witr) and loves what is odd
It completes your night prayers
It is a spiritual closure to your day
A sign of strong faith and consistency
Method 1: Praying 3 Rak‘ahs Together (Common Way)
Step 1: Make Intention (Niyyah).
Quietly intend in your heart:
> “I intend to pray 3 rak‘ahs of Witr for Allah”.
(No need to say it aloud)
Step 2: First Rak‘ah.
Say Allahu Akbar
Recite:
Surah Al-Fatiha
Any short surah (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas).
Complete Ruku‘ and Sujood.
Step 3: Second Rak‘ah
Recite:
Surah Al-Fatiha
Another surah (e.g., Surah Al-Falaq).
Sit for Tashahhud
Then stand up for the 3rd rak‘ah without saying salam.
Step 4: Third Rak‘ah (Special Part)
Recite:
Surah Al-Fatiha
Another surah (e.g., Surah An-Nas).
Step 5: Dua Qunoot.
After recitation (before or after Ruku‘ — both are acceptable):
Raise your hands and recite:
> Allahumma ihdini feeman hadayt,
Wa ‘aafini feeman ‘aafayt,
Wa tawallani feeman tawallayt,
Wa baarik li feema a‘tayt,
Wa qini sharra ma qadayt.
If you don’t know this, you can make any sincere dua.
Step 6: Complete the Prayer.
Go to Ruku‘ → Sujood
Sit for final Tashahhud
End with Salam (Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah).
Other Valid Ways to Pray Witr

👉 This is considered one of the easiest and very authentic methods.
Method 3: More Rak‘ahs (5, 7, 9, etc.)
Pray continuously without sitting except in the last rak‘ah
End with one salam
Best Time to Pray Witr:
Anytime after ‘Isha
Best time: Last third of the night (Tahajjud time)
If you fear you won’t wake up, pray it before sleeping.
Important Rules & Tips:
Try never to miss Witr
Do not pray two Witr prayers in one night
