Obedience to parents (Birr al-Walidayn) is one of the most emphasized teachings in Islam. It is not just a social duty, but a spiritual obligation closely tied to one’s faith and relationship with Allah.
1. A Divine Command Linked with Tawheed.
In the Qur’an, Allah places kindness to parents immediately after the command to worship Him alone:
> “Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you show kindness to your parents…” (Qur’an 17:23)
This pairing highlights that honoring parents is among the highest acts of devotion in Islam.
2. A Pathway to Paradise:
Serving and respecting parents is a direct means of attaining Jannah:
> “Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.” (Ahmad, An-Nasa’i)
The Prophet (SAW) further emphasized priority in companionship:
> “Your mother, your mother, your mother, then your father.” (Bukhari & Muslim.
This shows the elevated status of parents, especially the mother.
3. Gratitude to Parents Reflects Gratitude to Allah.
Islam teaches that appreciating parents is part of appreciating Allah:
> “Be grateful to Me and to your parents…” (Qur’an 31:14)
Parents endure hardship, sacrifice, and endless care—making gratitude towards them a moral and religious duty.
4. Among the Greatest Deeds:
Kindness to parents ranks among the best of righteous actions:
> The Prophet (SAW) said:
“The best deeds are: prayer at its proper time, then kindness to parents…” (Bukhari & Muslim)
This places obedience to parents above many voluntary acts of worship.
5. Disobedience is a Major Sin:
Islam strongly warns against disrespecting parents:
> “…the greatest sins are associating partners with Allah and disobedience to parents.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Even the slightest expression of annoyance—like saying “uff”—is prohibited (Qur’an 17:23), showing how seriously Islam protects their dignity.
6. The Limits of Obedience:
Obedience to parents is essential—but not unconditional:
> “If they urge you to associate partners with Me… do not obey them, but treat them with kindness.” (Qur’an 31:15)
So a Muslim must:
Obey parents in all lawful matters
Refuse sinful commands
Maintain respect and kindness at all times
7. Source of Blessings in Life.
Honoring parents brings immense rewards:
Allah’s pleasure
Barakah in wealth and life
Peace and success in this world and the Hereafter.
The Prophet (SAW) said:
> “Allah’s pleasure is in the pleasure of the parents.” (Tirmidhi).
In Islam, obedience to parents is not optional—it is a core part of faith and character. It is:
A command from Allah
A gateway to Paradise
A sign of righteousness
A source of lifelong blessings
A true believer treats their parents with respect, humility, patience, and love, especially in their old age, recognizing their sacrifices and honoring their rights.
