Obedience to parents in Quran and Hadith

Obedience and kindness to parents (Birr al-Walidayn) is one of the most emphasized teachings in Islam, clearly mentioned in both the Qur’an and Hadith.

Obedience to Parents in the Qur’an

1. Surah Al-Isra (17:23–24).

> “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them even ‘uff’ (a word of disrespect), nor repel them, but speak to them a noble word.”

This verse shows:

Obedience to parents comes right after worship of Allah

Even a small expression of annoyance (“uff”) is forbidden

2. Surah Luqman (31:14).

> “And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness…”

Emphasizes:

The sacrifice of the mother

The duty to be grateful and obedient

3. Surah Al-Ankabut (29:8).

> “And We have enjoined upon man goodness to parents. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them…”

Important principle:

Obedience is required except in disobedience to Allah

4. Surah Al-Ahqaf (46:15).

> “We have enjoined upon man to be dutiful to his parents…”

Obedience to Parents in Hadith.

1. Among the Greatest Deeds

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the parents, and the anger of Allah lies in the anger of the parents.”

— (Tirmidhi)

2. Second Only to Prayer

A man asked:

> “Which deed is most beloved to Allah?”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Prayer at its proper time.”

He asked: “Then what?”

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Kindness to parents.”

— (Bukhari & Muslim)

3. Paradise Lies Under the Feet of Mothers

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “Paradise lies under the feet of mothers.”

— (Ahmad, Nasai)

Shows the high status of mothers

4. Severe Warning

The Prophet ﷺ said:

> “Shall I not inform you of the greatest of major sins?”

They said: Yes.

He said: “Associating partners with Allah and disobedience to parents…”

— (Bukhari & Muslim)

 Limits of Obedience:

Islam teaches balanced obedience:

✅ Obey parents in all good and lawful matters

❌ Do NOT obey if they command:

Shirk (associating partners with Allah),

But even then: 👉 You must still treat them with kindness and respect
