Sokoto Governor Doubles Corps Members’ Monthly Allowance to ₦20,000

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has doubled the monthly state allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, increasing it from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000.

The governor also announced a one-off cash gift of ₦30,000 for each corps member currently participating in the NYSC orientation exercise.

Aliyu made the announcements on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, located at the College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.

He explained that the increase was part of his administration's commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and providing a supportive environment for their national service.

As part of additional support, the governor approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC to improve monitoring and supervision, particularly in areas with difficult terrain.

He also promised to provide five cows daily to ensure adequate feeding of corps members throughout the orientation programme.

In addition, Aliyu directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently resolve challenges affecting electricity and water supply.

The governor emphasised the importance of the NYSC scheme in promoting national unity and integration, describing the contributions of corps members to national development as invaluable.

He further disclosed that his administration had invested more than ₦1 billion in renovating and upgrading the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area. According to him, the project is approximately 90 per cent complete.

Aliyu assured the corps members that their security and welfare would remain a priority, while urging ministries, government agencies and private employers not to reject graduates posted to their organisations for national service.

He also announced plans to establish a committee to ensure the effective implementation of the newly approved allowance.

Earlier, the NYSC Sokoto State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, commended the governor for his continuous support for the scheme and the welfare of corps members.

Ter expressed confidence that Aliyu would soon receive recognition as Nigeria's most NYSC-friendly governor in appreciation of his contributions.

He also praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his consistent support, including providing bulls for corps members during orientation exercises and presenting awards to the two best-performing corps members at every passing-out parade.

The NYSC coordinator equally acknowledged the contributions of security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Man O’ War, alongside philanthropists who supported the orientation exercise.

The Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Saidu Sifawa, represented by Justice Muhammad A. Sambo, administered the oath of allegiance to the newly deployed corps members.
