Senate Directs IGP to Investigate Killing of 113 People in Benue

The Nigerian Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to launch an urgent investigation into the killing of 113 people, including six Mobile Police officers, in a series of attacks on communities in Benue State.

The lawmakers also called on the Chief of Army Staff and other security and intelligence agency chiefs to intensify operations in the affected areas to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable residents.

The resolutions were reached on Thursday following a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Memga Udende, representing Benue North-East Senatorial District, over recurring attacks in Ukum, Katsina-Ala and Logo Local Government Areas.

While presenting the motion, Udende said the attacks had claimed numerous lives, destroyed property, displaced residents and disrupted farming and other economic activities across the affected communities.

According to the senator, 24 people were killed in Sai community in Katsina-Ala LGA, while 63 others died in attacks on Bom and Aboajio villages in Ukum LGA.

He added that 15 people, including six Mobile Police officers, were killed in Ayilamo, Logo LGA. Another 11 people reportedly lost their lives in attacks on Tse Biliji and Tse Shishi Nyako villages in Ukum LGA on October 8, 2026.

The four incidents brought the reported death toll to 113, prompting the senator to call for urgent government intervention to end the persistent violence.

The Senate condemned the killings and observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims. It also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and the Nigeria Police Force over the loss of its personnel.

The lawmakers further called for effective early-warning systems and rapid-response mechanisms to enable security agencies to detect threats and respond promptly before more lives are lost.

They also urged security chiefs to strengthen intelligence gathering and sustain military and police operations in the affected communities to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.

Speaking during the deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed concern over the killing of security personnel, questioning the safety of ordinary citizens who lacked the means to defend themselves.

Akpabio urged the relevant security authorities to take immediate steps to reinforce security in the affected areas and prevent further bloodshed.

The Senate's intervention comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of Benue State, where repeated attacks have continued to threaten lives, livelihoods and economic activities.
