Russia Launches Fresh Drone Attacks on Kyiv, School Hit

A Russian drone has struck a school in Kyiv as the Ukrainian capital came under another wave of Russian air attacks, according to Ukrainian officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said children and staff were sheltering when the drone hit the school on Thursday. No casualties were immediately reported.

Elsewhere in the capital, two Russian drones struck an important bridge linking eastern and western Kyiv, forcing authorities to suspend metro services and ground transportation in the area.

Ukraine’s nuclear safety regulator also said a Russian drone struck the grounds of a nuclear research facility in Kyiv on Wednesday. The attack caused a fire, which was quickly extinguished, but officials said there were no injuries and the facility’s test reactor was not damaged. The reactor has been shut down since 2022.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russian drone attacks increased in September, recording 3,177 attacks through September 29, compared with 2,850 in August.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities in the Belgorod region said a man was killed after a drone exploded in the town of Graivoron on Thursday.

The latest attacks came as the United Kingdom announced 31 new sanctions against Russia. Britain said the measures were aimed at reducing funding for Russia’s war effort and targeting individuals accused of involvement in the detention and mistreatment of Ukrainian civilians.

The UK government also sanctioned individuals it accused of involvement in the indoctrination and militarisation of Ukrainian children.

Britain said it did not seek confrontation with Russia but would continue supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing war.
