Police Remand Man Over Video of Attack on NDC Members

An Enugu East Magistrate’s Court sitting in Nkwo Nike, Enugu State, has remanded a 45-year-old man, Ani Chidi, in prison custody for allegedly recording and circulating a video of an attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw.

Chidi was arraigned by the Enugu State Police Command on Monday on three counts bordering on cybercrime and alleged criminal defamation under Section 24(2)(a) and (c)(i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

According to the charge sheet, the defendant allegedly published footage of the September 12, 2026 attack on social media platforms and online media outlets.

The police further alleged that Chidi falsely accused three individuals — Ani Nnabuike, Solomon Ifeanyi and Monday Anninwe — of being members of the armed group that attacked the NDC meeting.

The prosecution also accused him of threatening to kill one of the individuals and his family, allegedly causing him to fear an imminent attack.

Following the arraignment by Police Prosecutor Ajogwu, Chief Magistrate F. E. Chukwu ordered that Chidi be remanded in prison custody.

Reacting to the development, the Enugu State chapter of the NDC condemned the prosecution, alleging that the police had turned against a person who recorded evidence of the violence while suspected perpetrators of the gun attack were allegedly released.

The party called for an independent and transparent investigation into the Obuoffia political violence. It also urged the state authorities not to use the judicial process to intimidate or silence witnesses.

The NDC alleged that the man who recorded the incident had survived the attack and was now being targeted through what it described as politically motivated charges.

The party appealed to the Nigeria Police Force to distance itself from what it described as an abuse of the judicial process and urged the Enugu State Government to allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a fair and independent investigation into the incident.
