The Gombe State Government has approved ₦149 million as counterpart funding for the purchase of Dangote Refinery shares for 28,284 vulnerable women across the state’s 11 local government areas.
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) as part of efforts to promote financial inclusion, wealth creation and sustainable poverty reduction.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor’s spokesperson, Ismaila Uba Misilli, said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya approved the state’s contribution to enable the beneficiaries to participate in the financial empowerment programme.
Under the arrangement, the state government’s contribution will provide each beneficiary with 10 shares, while the Aliko Dangote Foundation will provide an additional 10 shares, bringing the total to 20 shares per woman.
The programme is designed to expand vulnerable women’s access to financial assets, strengthen their economic resilience and create opportunities for improved livelihoods and greater financial independence.
The Head of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Zouera Yusuf, commended Governor Yahaya for becoming the first governor in Nigeria to participate in the programme and fulfil the required counterpart funding obligation.
Yusuf also acknowledged the state government’s commitment to empowering women through policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable groups.
She said the partnership would create further economic opportunities for women and their households, while reaffirming the foundation’s commitment to supporting the state’s poverty reduction and wealth creation initiatives.
She added that the foundation was ready to sustain its collaboration with the state government to improve the economic well-being of residents.
To ensure effective coordination, transparency and accountability, the state government has inaugurated a multisectoral committee to oversee the implementation of the partnership.
According to Misilli, the committee comprises representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
The committee is expected to coordinate implementation and ensure that the programme achieves its intended objectives of promoting financial inclusion and improving the livelihoods of vulnerable women across Gombe State.
