Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has increased its undergraduate registration charges, with students now required to pay between ₦143,000 and ₦298,000 depending on their programme and level.
The new fees, approved by the university, will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session. They represent a significant increase from the ₦62,000 to ₦84,000 paid by students during the previous academic session.
Under the new schedule, 100-level students of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) will pay ₦242,000, up from ₦82,000. Dentistry fees have also increased from ₦82,625 to ₦242,000, while Law students will pay ₦182,000 compared with ₦82,625 previously.
Students studying major Engineering programmes, including Civil, Computer, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, will now pay ₦172,000 at 100 level, up from ₦82,625.
Nursing Science fees have risen from ₦78,875 to ₦212,000, while students of Medical Laboratory Science and Medical Radiography will also pay ₦212,000.
Veterinary Medicine students will pay ₦232,000, compared with ₦82,625 previously, while Computer Science students will pay ₦172,000 instead of ₦82,625.
Similarly, 100-level students of Accounting, Economics and Public Administration will now pay ₦152,000, up from ₦75,125.
The increase has sparked criticism from students and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). NANS President Akinteye Afeez described the fee increase as “a joke taken too far” and called on the university’s Vice-Chancellor to resign if he could no longer manage the institution effectively.
Students have also expressed dissatisfaction on social media, describing the latest increase as excessive and warning that higher university fees could make education increasingly difficult for ordinary Nigerians to afford.
The development comes amid renewed concerns that other Nigerian universities could follow ABU’s example and increase their fees, as institutions continue to face rising operational costs and expenses related to teaching and learning.
