The head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, has called on the Yemeni public to mobilise and join government-backed armed and security forces as fighting with the Houthis intensifies.
In a recorded speech, al-Alimi urged Yemenis to join the armed forces through official channels and support the government’s efforts to counter recent Houthi advances towards the strategically important Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
He also announced an immediate amnesty for Houthi fighters who defect and join government forces, provided the pardon is granted in accordance with constitutional and legal procedures.
Al-Alimi said the internationally recognised Yemeni government’s objective is to restore state control over the entire country, including Sana’a, which the Houthis seized in 2014.
> “Our objective is clear to everyone both at home and abroad: to restore state institutions and exercise their sovereignty over the entire country, including Sana’a,” he said.
His speech came after government forces reportedly lost ground along Yemen’s western Red Sea coast to the Houthis.
Meanwhile, military chiefs of staff from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan held their first meeting under the trilateral Mecca Pact defence agreement amid continued Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi-led coalition also said its air defence systems intercepted a ballistic missile launched towards Khamis Mushait and two drones heading towards Riyadh.
