The United States Senate has narrowly rejected a Democratic-led resolution seeking to prevent President Donald Trump from continuing military hostilities against Iran without authorization from Congress.
The resolution was defeated by a 50–49 vote on Thursday. It had previously passed the House of Representatives in July.
The vote largely followed party lines, with most Republican senators supporting Trump’s position and nearly all Democratic senators backing the resolution.
The measure sought to require congressional authorization before further US military action in the Iran conflict could continue.
The Senate’s decision means the resolution will not advance, leaving Trump with continued authority under the existing legal framework to conduct military operations against Iran.
Reuters reported that the vote came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, as Iranian officials have continued to reject calls for surrender following threats from the Trump administration.
