US President Donald Trump has praised the relationship between the United States and China, saying ties between the two countries’ people remain strong despite major differences between Washington and Beijing.
Trump made the remarks during a state dinner at the White House on Thursday, September 24, held in honour of Chinese President Xi Jinping during his three-day visit to Washington.
“President Xi and I both understand we represent different systems, but the ties between our people endure, and we’ve never gotten along better,” Trump said during a toast.
He added that the two countries could continue building a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations.
The dinner followed talks between Trump and Xi on several major issues, including trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence, as well as broader US-China relations and differences over Iran.
Xi, in his own remarks, said China’s goal of achieving “great national rejuvenation” could work alongside Trump’s pledge to “make America great again.”
The high-profile dinner was attended by several prominent business and technology figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault.
Trump had earlier personally welcomed Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, when they arrived at Joint Base Andrews near Washington on Wednesday, an unusual gesture compared with the traditional practice of welcoming visiting leaders at the White House.
