Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., forming a human chain to protest the board’s decision to close the iconic arts venue for repairs.
The “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” demonstration took place on Friday, September 18, 2026, with protesters filling streets in the Foggy Bottom neighbourhood and disrupting traffic. Some participants carried signs, wore costumes and booed when US President Donald Trump was mentioned during the event.
The protest was organised by Hands Off the Arts. Its co-founder, Chris Raleigh, said the turnout was intended to demonstrate opposition to Trump’s plans for the institution.
The demonstration came days after a board appointed by Trump voted to close the Kennedy Center for repairs expected to take up to two years. The decision followed a dispute over Trump’s efforts to place his name on the building.
Trump returned to the Kennedy Center’s board as chairman after replacing previous trustees with his own appointees. His administration has argued that the institution requires major repairs to prevent further deterioration.
A federal judge previously ruled that the board lacked the authority to rename the Kennedy Center or add Trump’s name to its facade without congressional approval. The centre was established by Congress as a memorial to former President John F. Kennedy.
Trump has also declined to rule out demolishing the building. However, a federal judge recently ordered the Kennedy Center to provide 30 days’ notice before making any major structural changes, including demolition.
Protest organisers said they remain concerned about the future of the landmark and are calling for greater protection of the institution.
