Saudi Arabia’s Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted two ballistic missiles and two drones launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis toward the kingdom.
The coalition said the missiles were heading toward Khamis Mushait, while the two drones were directed toward the capital, Riyadh. It added that it was monitoring continued missile and drone threats against Saudi Arabia.
Saudi civil defence authorities had earlier issued alerts in Khamis Mushait and Abha, although no alert was issued for Riyadh.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen and the country’s most populated areas, have been carrying out attacks against Saudi Arabia since announcing a naval blockade against Riyadh in July. Their attacks have targeted Saudi cities, energy infrastructure and shipping in the Red Sea.
The attacks are adding pressure to global oil supplies amid the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains largely disrupted.
Earlier, the military chiefs of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey met in Riyadh to discuss threats facing the kingdom. The three countries signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement last month, under which an armed attack on one member would be regarded as an attack on all three.
Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman also said he had reaffirmed with Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, their continued joint efforts to confront attacks against Saudi Arabia under the agreement.
