Russia Says It Intercepted Massive Ukrainian Drone Attack During Elections

Russian air defense forces reportedly intercepted a large wave of Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and surrounding regions on Sunday, September 20, 2026, as Russians continued voting in parliamentary and regional elections.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defenses intercepted up to 1,600 drones heading toward Russia, including around 450 drones reportedly targeting Moscow.

Authorities in the Moscow region said the attacks caused civilian deaths and injuries, after drones struck residential buildings in several areas.

Falling debris and drone impacts also damaged a fuel refinery in the Moscow suburbs, while emergency teams and firefighters were deployed to affected industrial and residential areas.

The attack significantly disrupted transportation in the capital. According to Russia’s state news agency TASS, more than 30 flights were grounded at Moscow’s major airports because of security restrictions.

The reported drone assault came amid Russia’s three-day parliamentary and regional elections, which began on September 19.

Russian authorities have not provided independent verification of the full number of drones claimed to have been intercepted, and Ukraine has not been cited in the report as claiming responsibility for the attack.
