NAFDAC Destroys Expired Drugs Worth ₦59m in Rivers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed expired donated medicines and medical consumables valued at approximately ₦59 million in Rivers State.

The expired products, which included antidepressants, ulcer medications, painkillers, hypertension drugs and other medical consumables, were imported from the United States through the Nigeria Ports Authority Area 1 Port in Port Harcourt.

NAFDAC officials, working with the Nigeria Customs Service, intercepted the products at the port before they could enter circulation.

Speaking during the destruction exercise at the Igwuruta dump site along the Eneka–Igwuruta Road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, NAFDAC South-South Director, Chukwuma Oligbu, said the action was necessary to protect public health.

He warned that expired medicines could pose serious health risks if they re-enter the supply chain, stressing that such products must be removed and safely destroyed.

Oligbu said NAFDAC would continue to strengthen inspections, surveillance and enforcement across the South-South region to prevent expired, substandard and unsafe medicines from reaching Nigerians.

He also commended the Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring the expired drugs were intercepted and destroyed.
