Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she had a “very good” phone conversation with US President Donald Trump as Mexico and the United States continue negotiations on a new bilateral trade agreement.
Sheinbaum said the talks are making progress and that Mexico is seeking reductions in US tariffs on Mexican products, particularly steel, aluminium and automobiles.
She said Mexico is working to reach an agreement while maintaining the country’s sovereignty and protecting its interests.
Mexico and the US are seeking a trade deal ahead of the November US midterm elections, amid concerns over the economic impact of Trump’s tariffs.
Mexico and Canada are both part of the USMCA trade agreement, which has supported extensive economic integration with the United States. However, Trump’s tariffs on several industries have created new trade tensions.
The negotiations are also taking place amid growing tensions between the US and Canada, as both countries have increased tariffs on some products. Trump’s previous comments about Canada becoming the 51st US state and proposals for US military operations in Mexico have also generated concern from leaders in both countries.
