Iran will immediately reciprocate if the United States returns to its commitments under an interim agreement signed in June, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said.
Pezeshkian made the statement on Tuesday while attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The comments followed the first direct exchange of attacks between Iran and the United States since late July. The United States reportedly struck Larak Island, after which Iran launched attacks on two US military bases in Jordan.
“Iran will immediately reciprocate if the United States returns to its commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding,” Pezeshkian said, according to Iranian state media.
The interim agreement was reached in June as part of efforts to end the conflict, which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. However, the agreement later broke down amid disagreements over its implementation.
Iran has repeatedly said it would allow unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global oil shipments, provided Washington fulfils its obligations under the agreement.
Pezeshkian also stressed that continued warfare was in no one’s interest and said Tehran remained open to finding a negotiated solution to its dispute with Washington.
US President Donald Trump has warned that there would be a response to Iran’s latest attacks, although he said the renewed strikes did not necessarily mean a return to a full-scale war.
