The Chief Imam of Ilaro, Ogun State, Tajudeen Adewunmi, has revealed that he returned N25 million entrusted to him by late veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, to the actor’s family following his death.
According to the Imam, Ogogo transferred the money to him before his death to help complete the rebuilding of his late grandfather’s house. He clarified that the money was not intended for a mosque project, as had been rumoured.
Adewunmi explained that Ogogo, who lived in the same neighbourhood, contacted him after the Imam visited him in the hospital. The actor reportedly said he wanted to keep the money with him because he might travel to India for medical treatment.
The Imam said he documented the transaction and informed members of Ogogo’s family about the money at the time.
Following Ogogo’s death in August 2026 at the age of 66, rumours emerged that the N25 million was meant for a mosque project. Adewunmi said he subsequently met with the actor’s family during the seventh-day prayer and clarified the purpose of the money.
He said the family agreed that the funds should be transferred to Ogogo’s elder brother, Rilwan, who would oversee the money with his children.
Adewunmi stressed that the money belonged to Ogogo’s family and was originally intended for the late actor’s grandfather’s house project.
Taiwo Hassan was a prominent figure in the Yoruba film industry, and his death sparked widespread tributes from colleagues, friends and fans across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
