14 Killed, 11 Injured in Weapons Depot Explosion in Syria’s Idlib

At least 14 people have been killed and 11 others injured after an explosion at a temporary weapons depot near Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province, according to Syrian state television.

The blast occurred on Wednesday at Burj al-Nimra, in the northern Idlib countryside. Thick smoke rose from the site as emergency teams worked to control fires and search for people trapped beneath the rubble.

Syrian authorities said some Defence Ministry personnel were among those injured. Firefighters were reportedly delayed by secondary explosions at the site.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Syria’s Defence Ministry said the depot had been used to store weapons and munitions left over from the country’s 2011–2024 uprising and civil war.

The incident comes just days after another ammunition-related explosion in Idlib province. On September 1, a vehicle carrying ammunition exploded in Binnish, killing five people and injuring several others.

Authorities are continuing investigations into Wednesday’s deadly blast.
