DR Congo Army Plane Crash Kills 14, Including Senior Military Officers

At least 14 people, including senior military officials, have been killed after a Congolese army aircraft crashed into a residential area in southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The aircraft was travelling from Kikwit to the capital, Kinshasa, on Friday when it developed a technical problem and attempted to land in Kenge, Kwango Province.

However, there was no available landing strip in Kenge, and the plane crashed into a residential plot, according to Remy Saki Bokinda, deputy governor of Kwango.

Congolese military spokesperson Major-General Efomi Ekenge confirmed that all 14 people on board died in the accident.

He said 12 of the victims were burned beyond recognition, while the pilot's body was found outside the aircraft.

The military said those killed included civilians, members of an official delegation travelling with two generals, and other military personnel.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has faced decades of conflict, particularly in its eastern region near the border with Rwanda, where several armed groups are fighting for control of territory and valuable mineral resources.
