Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is set to have a private dinner with US President Donald Trump at the White House, marking their first one-on-one meeting, according to US media reports.
Trump confirmed the planned meeting on Sunday and reiterated his opposition to slowing the pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development. He argued that imposing new regulations could allow China to overtake the United States in AI technology.
Trump said the US currently has an estimated 18-month lead over China in AI development and argued that maintaining the country’s technological advantage should take priority.
The meeting comes just two days after a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s decision to classify Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”, preventing the US military from using the company’s AI models.
Anthropic came under pressure from the Trump administration after the company refused in February to allow its technology to be used for fully autonomous weapons or domestic mass surveillance.
Trump has previously criticised Amodei after the Anthropic chief called for a pause in AI development over concerns about potential risks associated with the rapidly advancing technology.
Amodei was also absent from a state dinner held for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, which was attended by other major AI industry figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The Trump administration maintains that major AI companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta, cannot significantly slow their development efforts because doing so could allow China to gain an advantage.
Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are also scheduled to meet with leading AI executives on Tuesday.
