The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to revoke the business and tourist visas of as many as 200,000 foreigners who have applied for or are currently seeking asylum in the United States.
According to documents from the US State Department obtained by The Associated Press and two US officials, the planned action could become the largest mass visa revocation in US history and is likely to face legal challenges.
The State Department is expected to begin revoking B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 to people who entered the US as short-term visitors but later applied for asylum or are currently seeking asylum.
The process is being carried out in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the government is identifying foreigners who entered the country as visitors but later filed asylum claims in an attempt to remain in the US permanently.
He did not confirm the exact number of visas that will be revoked, saying the process will be conducted gradually and the figure could change.
Officials said the visa cancellations would not automatically lead to immediate deportation. Many people with pending asylum cases would instead lose their B1 or B2 visa status while their asylum cases continue.
Since Trump returned to office for his second term, his administration has introduced several tougher immigration and visa measures, including stricter scrutiny of applicants' social-media histories, expensive visa-bond requirements and restrictions on visas for citizens of certain countries.
