The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has suspended Professor Ifeanyi Odinye of the Department of Chinese Studies for three months over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The suspension, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, comes with half salary and follows the preliminary findings of a six-member investigative panel.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2026, when angry students reportedly assaulted and stripped the professor after a female student allegedly accused him of attempting to sexually assault her in his office. A video of the incident subsequently went viral on social media.
According to the university, the investigative panel has so far examined two of its five terms of reference and found that Prof. Odinye violated the university’s General and Academic Regulations in connection with an examination-misconduct case involving the student.
The university said the professor allegedly failed to properly document and report the examination misconduct and returned a phone recovered from the student during the examination.
The panel has been given an additional two weeks to investigate the remaining issues, including whether sexual harassment occurred, identifying those involved in the assault against the professor, and determining whether there was any kidnapping incident.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Aloysius Attah, said the committee would submit its final recommendations to the Vice-Chancellor, after which a final decision would be made, including the possibility of criminal prosecution.
The university also reiterated its commitment to staff and student welfare, transparency, fair hearing and a zero-tolerance policy toward unethical conduct.
