UN Slams Israeli Threat Against Gaza Communities Over Children’s Kites

The United Nations has condemned Israel’s threat to evacuate Palestinians from parts of Gaza where children have been flying kites.

UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani described the threat as “outrageous,” saying the proposed expulsion of residents over children flying kites was unacceptable.

Israel had warned Hamas that it would intensify military operations if kites, drones or balloons continued to be launched toward Israeli communities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces would target those responsible and evacuate residents from areas where the launches originated.

Several kites without incendiary devices reportedly drifted into communities in southern Israel over the past month. The incidents have revived memories of incendiary kites and balloons launched from Gaza during protests against Israel’s blockade in 2018.

Gaza’s popular committees have since urged parents to prevent children from flying kites, citing concerns for their safety.

Hamas political bureau member Basem Naim rejected Israel’s warning, arguing that children’s recreational activities should not be treated as military actions.

The dispute comes amid a Gaza ceasefire that has continued to face violations and Israeli attacks. According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, more than 1,280 Palestinians have been killed since the agreement took effect in October.
