Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled a midnight attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday when the heavily armed terrorists attempted to overrun the military base.
According to the Acting Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the troops mounted a strong counter-offensive, engaging the attackers in an intense gun battle.
Goni said the troops deployed sustained firepower, forcing the terrorists to retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
“During the engagement, troops neutralised several of the terrorists and recovered weapons, ammunition and communication gadgets,” he said.
He added that surveillance footage reviewed by military intelligence later showed that the fleeing terrorists evacuated several dead and wounded fighters as they withdrew from the area.
The recovered weapons and other materials are currently being subjected to further operational assessment, the military said.
Despite successfully repelling the attack, Goni disclosed that part of the base’s defensive position was temporarily breached during the intense exchange of fire.
Some soldiers sustained injuries in the confrontation and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The military said its troops remain on alert as operations continue to track and counter terrorist activities in the area.
