The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has launched the EasyZakat app, a digital platform aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the collection and distribution of Zakat in Nigeria.
The platform was developed by the Ummah Zakat Foundation (UZF) and unveiled on behalf of the Sultan by the Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Usman Chindo Yamusa III, at a ceremony held in Abuja.
The event was attended by Islamic scholars, government officials, development partners and members of the diplomatic community. It also featured the inauguration of the foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Speaking on behalf of the Sultan, the Emir of Keffi described Zakat as more than an act of charity, stressing that it is a religious obligation and an important instrument for social justice, wealth redistribution and the protection of vulnerable members of society.
He said the establishment of the Ummah Zakat Foundation came at a crucial time, as the organisation seeks to combine Islamic principles with modern technology to strengthen Zakat administration and increase its impact on society.
Stakeholders at the event said technology-driven Zakat administration could contribute significantly to poverty reduction, social protection and human capital development in Nigeria.
The EasyZakat platform is expected to provide a more transparent and accountable system for managing Zakat funds and ensuring that they reach eligible beneficiaries.
