Six Chinese nationals were among seven people killed after a fire broke out at a major gas chemical complex in Russia’s far eastern Amur region, according to the plant.
Nine other Chinese workers remain missing following Tuesday’s fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Chernigovka.
The plant said 152 people were treated for injuries, including 36 who were taken to hospitals. The fire has since been extinguished, while an emergency services aircraft was sent to transport injured workers to hospitals elsewhere in Russia.
The Amur Gas Chemical Complex, one of the world’s largest planned producers of polyethylene and polypropylene, is a joint project between Russian company Sibur and Chinese energy giant Sinopec. The facility had not yet begun operations and was preparing to start production.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into the incident, including possible violations of industrial safety regulations. Authorities are working to determine what caused the fire.
Once operational, the complex is expected to produce about 2.3 million tonnes of polyethylene and 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene annually.
The incident highlights the risks faced by foreign workers involved in the construction of large industrial projects in Russia.
