A record 230 migrants have arrived in the United Kingdom after crossing the English Channel in a single boat from France, according to British authorities.
The boat reportedly left France late on Sunday and reached the English coast early Monday after being intercepted by British authorities.
The latest crossing surpasses the previous record of 165 people who crossed the Channel in a single boat last month.
The UK Home Office condemned the actions of people-smuggling gangs, accusing them of overcrowding unsafe boats and putting migrants’ lives at serious risk.
“This latest incident demonstrates the reckless and dangerous tactics employed by the criminal gangs facilitating these crossings,” a Home Office spokesperson said.
The British government said it was making progress in reducing small-boat crossings but acknowledged that further action was needed. It has also agreed to a new payment-by-results arrangement with France aimed at increasing patrols and enforcement operations along French beaches.
Provisional figures indicate that 14,819 people have crossed the English Channel from France so far this year, representing a 43 percent decline compared with the same period last year.
The latest incident comes just days after more than 150 people were rescued from another migrant boat in the Channel after it caught fire.
