A medical organisation has accused the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N), a rebel group aligned with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), of killing 27 people, including four children, in South Kordofan.
The Sudan Doctors Network said the attacks occurred in Qardud and Abu Hamama, areas inhabited by the Otoro ethnic group. The organisation said the violence forced many residents to flee towards Abu Hitan and Kadugli.
The group described the attacks against unarmed civilians on ethnic grounds as a serious violation of international humanitarian law. It warned that continued violence could turn the conflict in South Kordofan into a wider ethnic conflict.
The killings followed intense fighting earlier this year between SPLM-N forces and members of the Otoro community. The tensions reportedly began over land disputes, adding another dimension to Sudan’s wider civil war.
The Sudan Doctors Network called on the international community to pressure SPLM-N leaders to stop attacks against civilians. It also reported that women were among those wounded in the latest violence.
The SPLM-N is a breakaway faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, which governs neighbouring South Sudan. Its leader, Abdel Aziz al-Hilu, has aligned his forces with the RSF and joined the RSF-led parallel government in Sudan.
Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023 when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. The conflict has reportedly killed at least 59,000 people and displaced about 14 million from their homes.
The World Health Organization estimates that around 33.7 million people—about two-thirds of Sudan’s population—need humanitarian assistance.
