The Osun State Police Command has arrested the state Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, in connection with a shooting incident that occurred during an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Ilesa on Saturday.
At least four people were reportedly injured during the incident, including a 14-year-old boy identified as Ilesanmi, who was allegedly hit in the thigh by a stray bullet while at his mother’s shop.
According to an eyewitness, Kola Adeoti, sporadic gunshots were fired during a confrontation involving APC supporters and some Accord Party chieftains who were reportedly in the area.
Adeoti alleged that personnel of a security outfit accompanying the Accord leaders opened fire at APC supporters, leading to tension and protests in parts of Ilesa.
The injured victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment, while no death had been reported as of the time of filing this report.
Why the Commissioner Was Arrested
The spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the arrest.
He said police officers responded immediately after receiving reports of the incident, cordoned off the area and recovered several items, including spent cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps.
Ojelabi said Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the police command for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
Adeleke's Camp Condemns Arrest
Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, condemned the manner in which the commissioner was arrested.
He described the arrest as politically motivated and alleged that it was part of a broader attempt to intimidate Accord Party leaders and supporters ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Olajengbesi called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, to intervene and investigate what he described as a pattern of arrests involving Accord members in Ijesaland.
He also demanded the immediate release of Adejoorin, insisting that there was no credible legal basis for his detention.
The police, however, maintained that the commissioner’s arrest was connected to the investigation into the shooting incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
